Queen of Darkness 9: Joanna Ebenstein

Joanna Ebenstein is the creator of the fantastic website Morbid Anatomy, whose goal it is to survey “the Interstices of Art and Medicine, Death and Culture.” Ebenstein also does design and photography. At times, Morbid Anatomy itself may seem much like a grisly carnival side-show until you get below the surface and realize that it really a thorough, earnest, educated look at anatomy, death, and our curiosity about both subjects. So far her site has inspired a gallery show which she curated. I’m sure there’s more to come.

Queen of Darkness 8: Alice in Wonderland

You may be asking me, “But the Tim Burton movie comes out in 2010! What does Alice in Wonderland have to do with 2009?” The answer is: anticipation. Besides, there are more items coming than just a Tim Burton movie. 2010 promises to be the “Year of Alice”. There are two movies, two video games, an MMO and a SyFy Channel miniseries coming. One of the video games will be Disney’s, based on the Tim Burton movie. The other game will be the sequel to American McGee’s Alice. The other movie is Malice in Wonderland, which IMDB currently shows as having been released, somewhere or other. Also, there has been an anticipatory avalanche of coolness.
Alas, no animal hats.

Queen of Darkness 7: Zoetica Ebb

I mentioned not too long ago that if you’re not reading Coilhouse then you should go check it out. While assembling a list of the Dark Queens of 2009, it occurred to me that one of their staff would make a great Queen of Darkness. Unfortunately, I had some trouble choosing between what I assume are the three co-founders: Nadya Lev, Zoetica Ebb and Meredith Yayanos. Like Wurzeltod, they are purveyors of alt culture. All of them do cool things like photography, music, and of course, writing. Choices, choices, choices. In the end, an animal mask sealed the nomination.

Besides contributing to Coilhouse, Zoeteca also has her own blog, Biorequiem dot com.

Queen of Darkness 6: Amanda Palmer

Amanda Palmer is having quite the year. For one thing, it looks like her book, “Who Killed Amanda Palmer” has sold out (although there are copies on sale still on Amazon.) In addition, she and Neil Gaiman are a couple. She gets a least 500 internet points for that.
