Edward Gorey was born on February 22, 1925. Among other things, he is remembered as a writer and illustrator of odd books. A little nonsense here. A tragic story there. Tiny monsters in every picture over there. Alphabet books as well. He enjoyed using pen names that were anagrams of his own. Here are some of them: Ogdred Weary, Eduard Blutig, Mrs. Regera Dowdy, Raddory Gewe, Dogear Wryde, E. G. Deadworry, Edward Pig, Wardore Edgy, Madame Groeda Weyrd, and D. Awdrey-Gore. He died April 15, 2000.

Happy Birthday Charles Addams

Charles Addams was born on January 7, 1912. It may be that he will be best remembered for creating the Addams Family, which became a TV show and later some movies, but in my heart, Charles Addams will always be my favorite cartoonist. His unique sense of humor and ability to see things the way they really are made him stand out among the pale dross masquerading as cartoonery (I’m looking straight at you, Family Circle and Marmaduke). During his life he had three wives, a crossbow collection, befriended Ray Bradbury, and went partying with Greta Garbo. Although he passed away on September 29, 1988, his cartoons live on in over 17 collections.

Max Schreck as Graf Orlok in Nosferatu (1922)

Maximilian Schreck was born on the 6th of September, 1879 in Berlin, Germany. Although he started as a theater actor, and later starred in a great number of films, it appears that he is most famous for playing a vampire. His role as Count Orlok in F. W. Murnau’s Nosferatu, a Symphony of Terror continues to be shown and celebrated by movie lovers everywhere. Legend has it that Murnau felt Schreck was terrifying enough that all the makeup he needed was pointy ears and teeth to complete the transformation from man to vampire. Schreck died Frebruary 20, 1936. Happy Birthday Max Schreck!

A big Happy Birthday to Howard Phillips Lovecraft. Born August 20, 1890, H.P. Lovecraft wrote some of the most chilling fiction ever penned. Lovecraft is best known for being the creator of Cthulhu. He passed away on March 15, 1937. Happy Birthday H.P. Lovecraft!

I’m not sure if I can really put into words how much I love the sinister Peter Lorre. He was amazing. Lorre was born László Löwenstein on June 26, 1904 and left us on March 23, 1964. Happy birthday Peter Lorre.
