News: The Death Reference Desk

sidebarskellyA friend of mine tipped me off to a new website that hopes to be the online reference for people who are curious about death. The Death Reference Desk is run by two librarians and a professor of death and dying practices, so you know these people are gravely serious! (Sorry. I couldn’t resist.)

Right now they have blog entries up about such diverse topics as people who live in the City of the Dead in Cairo, people who choose to be buried face-down (there’s one I never thought of), and how Michael Jackson’s body might end up being “plastinated” by the famous Gunther von Hagens of Body Worlds. (And here I thought I was going to get out the other end of this week without mentioning Michael Jackson, drat-it.)

Oh Ho but it gets better. They have an online query form where you can ask questions about death to be answered by the staff. So don’t let them moulder away, go ask them a question!

More Alice in Wonderland 2010

Instead of more Alice in Wonderland 2010, I should say the Last of Alice in Wonderland 2010. Really if you are into dark stuff and haven’t seen these yet then you need to stop spending so much time outside in the sun. Luckily the Tim Burton movie is a sequel to Alice in Wonderland and happens 10 years after Alice first went down the rabbit hole. The synopsis says something about Alice having forgotten all about her trip through the looking-glass, and what Alice found there but I find it hard to believe that anybody could forget THAT.

More eye candy. I got my hands on the huge versions so if you haven’t seen them in enormo-vision, you should check it out.

Cast (Partial List)

Mia Wasikowski as Alice Kingsley
Johnny Depp as The Mad Hatter
Michael Sheen as The White Rabbit
Anne Hathaway as The White Queen
Helena Bonham Carter as The Red Queen
Stephen Fry as The Cheshire Cat
Alan Rickman as The Caterpillar
Crispin Glover as The Knave of Hearts
Matt Lucas as Tweedledee / Tweedledum
Christopher Lee as The Jabberwock
Noah Taylor as The March Hare

Nice! There is going to be a Jabberwock!!! Apparently the movie will feature live actors blended with motion capture-animated characters (like was done with Beowulf) and will be in 3D.

MAD TEA: Miko in Hammy’s Shop

I keep meaning to post this cool monster from an interesting store. This is MAD TEA. MAD TEA stands for Monster Art Dolls Toy Etsy Artists. It’s a stretch I know. See this page for details about MAD TEA.

The cool monster in question is named Miko. Miko is made from felted wool and is very mysterious.

Maybe it’s because I love purple. Maybe it’s a certain look in the eyes. Maybe it’s the enigmatic posture. Who knows! Hammy has other interesting creations in her Etsy shop, including a rather cute bunny rabbit named Beesie. *shudder* (Regular readers will know that my domain is constantly under threat of invasion by fluffy bunny rabbits.)

Thus ends this week’s installment of MAD TEA. See you next week for more Monster Art Doll Toy Etsy Artists.

News Bites: Happy 6 Months to Me and A New Member of the Family

Six Months and 109 Posts Later

Today it’s been six months since I began to detail my progress through the bleak attics and basements of the Internets. This will be post 109. Happy six months to me! There’s more to come.

A New Member of the Family

I wish that I could tell you I keep piranha or deadly blow fish. Instead I must admit that I keep goldfish. I hope you’ll believe me when I tell you that they are the most terrifying and awful goldfish that have ever swam the length of a dark overgrown pond. They are. Today I was surprised to find that the little – I mean – huge, horrible monster goldfish have spawned more evil progeny. Here is a photo of one of them. They are still tiny.

Happy Birthday Peter Lorre

Happy Birthday Peter Lorre

I’m not sure if I can really put into words how much I love the sinister Peter Lorre. He was amazing. Lorre was born László Löwenstein on June 26, 1904 and left us on March 23, 1964. Happy birthday Peter Lorre.
